After earning his law degree from the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law School at Touro University in 2000, Staten Island attorney Gary DeFilippo was an Assistant District Attorney for the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office in the Appeals and Narcotics unit, for two years before starting his own practice, the Law Offices of Gary R. DeFilippo, PC, based in Staten Island. As an ADA Gary wrote the precedent setting Appellate Brief in People v Forbes, 283 A.D.2d 92, 728 N.Y.S.2d 64 (2nd Dep’t 2001) cert denied 97 N.Y.2d 681 738 N.Y.S.2d 296, 764 N.E.2d 400 (2001)
As a private practice attorney, Mr. DeFilippo represents clients in cases involving criminal defense, personal injury, and commercial litigation (as it relates to contracts). Some of his most notable cases include People v Timothy Turner, 79 Misc.3d 473, 190 N.Y.S.3d 830 (Richmond Cty Sup. Ct. March 30, 2023) where he achieved an unprecedented reversal of Turner's conviction and 12 year prison sentence, at the trial court level. In Alkaifi v. Celestial Church of Christ Calvary Parish, 24 A.D.3d 476, 808 N.Y.S.2d 230 (2nd Dep’t. 2005) he stopped a foreclosure action against Celestial Church. And in Krisky v Krisky, another Richmond County case involving personal injury, he negotiated a settlement for the full value of the homeowner's insurance policy, $500,000.00 for his client's severed finger. He is currently taking on SUNco Solar aka ATTYX LLC and Solar Mosaic, LLC, in a contract fraud case involving solar panels and a financial agreement in Policastri v. SUNco and Solar Mosaic, in Richmond County Supreme Court.
In addition to his role at the firm, Mr. DeFilippo also serves as counsel for inmates preparing for review before the parole board (in his capacity as president of Parole Preparation Services.com). In this role, he oversees a company that provides inmates with parole packages containing information about the people being paroled, their accomplishments before and during their sentence, and post-incarceration plans.
His work in law also includes memberships to professional organizations, such as Columbian Lawyers Association, the Staten Island Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, as a Director, and Delta Theta Phi International Law Fraternity. He is also a member of the Richmond County Bar Association and the New York State Bar and he is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
In 2024 Gary was also recognized by Lawyers of Distinction for Excellence in the practice of Criminal Defense Law .
